2004-2005 PA Alternate System of Assessment (PASA) Results
The Pennsylvania Alternate System of Assessment (PASA) measures the attainment of knowledge and skills of students with significant cognitive disabilities through performance tasks. Like the PSSA, the purpose of the PASA is to provide information to schools that will aid them in improving instruction.
The PASA was developed in response to the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act
(IDEA ‘97). States are required by IDEA ‘97 to develop alternate assessment systems for students who cannot participate in the regular state assessments.
To participate in the PASA, students must meet specific criteria (listed in the
Accommodations Guidelines) established by the Department of Education, Bureau of Special Education. The PASA is appropriate for a small number of students with severe cognitive disabilities. All other students must participate in the PSSA, with or without accommodations.
